Flowers in Her Hair
Hyunjin Jo

June 2024
Graphite on Cotton Paper

Of all the pieces I've made, this one is my favourite.

I've mentioned before that romance is a driving factor behind my work, primarily regarding Hyunjin. Through her, I learned to embrace my softer side, which has since become a hallmark of my work.

This piece marked the beginning of a self-imposed period of intense study. I decided that I didn't want my work to be limited by my technical ability, so I took six months to learn to draw as realistically as possible.

In the case of this particular portrait, I didn't need to embellish or try to make it more beautiful than the reference material. Instead I simply had to capture my model as faithfully as possible.
